GREENSBORO, N.C. – Two John Caldwell free throws with 1:04 left in regulation gave visiting Roanoke College a 64-62 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball victory over Guilford College Wednesday night. The Maroons (16-4, 8-3 ODAC) overcame a 15-point second half deficit to remain a perfect 6-0 on the road this season.

Caldwell finished with a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. He paced four Maroons in double-figure scoring. His jumper in the paint with 5:24 left gave Roanoke its first second-half lead and capped a 26-10 rally that featured four of the Maroons’ nine three-pointers. He scored all seven of his second-half points in the final 5:24.

Roanoke’s Cameron Smith (Lexington, N.C./Northeast Guilford) stole the ball on Guilford’s ensuing possession, but the Quakers’ defense held and Guilford had one last possession to tie or win the game. Jarrod Rogers’ (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) runner in the lane missed the mark and teammate Alston Thompson (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) collected the rebound, but his off-balanced shot as time expired persevered Roanoke’s win.

Thompson led all scorers with 16 points off the bench for Guilford. He shared game-high rebounding honors with Caldwell for his team-leading fourth double-double of the year. The Quakers’ Will Freeman added 14 points and eight rebounds, which helped Guilford to a 46-26 edge in inside scoring. Carson Long (Pilot Mountain, N.C./East Surry) finished with nine points and four rebounds for the Quakers.

Joey Miller had 13 points and John Fitchett added 11 for the Maroons. Smith collected 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists playing before his hometown crowd. Roanoke had nine of its 14 offensive rebounds in the second half and scored 19 second-chance points to Guilford’s 16.

Guilford visits Shenandoah University Saturday (2/6) at 2:00 p.m. and plays at Bridgewater College the following day in a contest rescheduled from January 23.
